Why Ferrari taking a different approach to the Bahrain test than the other teams?

Ferrari appears to do something slightly distinct to some of their opponents for the next testing days in Bahrain, following their apparent excellent showing at the first pre-season test in Barcelona.

In contrast to what is expected of some of its rivals, Ferrari’s Mattia Binotto has announced that the team would not be running any big improvements at the next pre-season test in Bahrain.

The Scuderia appeared to have performed well in the first pre-2022 testing event in Barcelona, putting in more laps than any other team over the three days.

Lewis Hamilton has hinted that the Italian team is one to watch this season, but Binotto has downplayed this, claiming that it is still too early to anticipate the pecking order.

However, when the following testing days start happening on the 10th and 12th of March, it is obvious that Ferrari will be running a basically unchanged car, whereas most other teams will be introducing changes.

Binotto: Ferrari to “optimise” what they have

In Bahrain, Ferrari wants to “optimise” the efficiency of the F1-75, according to Binotto, who believes the car has more to offer.

“It will not be much different compared to what we’ve got,” Binotto told media including RacingNews365.com.

“I think that the first step for us will be to optimise what we have. We are still far from the best performance, not only because we are running high fuel and not the best engine mode, but simply because there is a lot to exploit more from the car itself.

“We are more focused on that one [extracting more pace], not only in terms of set-up engineering, but as well in terms of driving style and the drivers themselves. So let’s wait, let’s see what the others will bring.

“Certainly as Ferrari we are always concerned on upgrades of our competitors. And I’m pretty sure they will be very, very strong by then.”

Ferrari takes a different approach

Ferrari’s choice not to bring modifications to the next test has piqued some interest, with technical specialist Sam Collins telling Formula1.com: “There’s only one team that have told me that they’re not going to be bringing big updates to Bahrain, and that’s Ferrari, which in itself is quite interesting.

“So I think I would let people judge from that what they like, but, for me, it could be a really good day for the red teams.”

The last pre-season test will be held in Bahrain little over a week before the season begins, on the 18th and 20th of March, with the Bahrain Grand Prix.
