Lewis Hamilton has claimed that his set-up strategy before to qualifying for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix play a significant role in his Q1 elimination.
Before facing his first Q1 disqualification since the 2017 season, Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton believes he followed “the wrong way” related to car setup at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit.
As the session drew to a conclusion, Hamilton found himself on the verge of dropping out, a fraction of a second behind colleague George Russell.
Hamilton had been taken aback by Russell’s performance in the sister car, especially in the opening sector of the lap, and had tried a late double flyer run in the hopes of qualifying.
On his penultimate lap, Hamilton recorded a fastest time of 1:30.343 to move into 15th position and out of the elimination zone, only for Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll to outperform him seconds later and push him back.
Hamilton offers explanation for Q1 exit
Hamilton revealed in the paddock that he had a difficult time behind the wheel after failing at the first qualifying obstacle.
“I just struggled with the balance of the car; it’s not where we want to be,” he told Sky Sports.
“o. no. We’re professional,” Hamilton answered when questioned if yesterday’s events, which included the drivers convening for many hours after a missile attack on a nearby oil storage, had an impact.
“We unfortunately just probably went the wrong way with the set-up.”
Hamilton was stating at the same time as Haas driver Mick Schumacher was involved in a horrific crash in Q2, with the German being brought to the circuit’s Medical Centre for assessment.
“I’ve not heard the news, but I hope he’s okay,” Hamilton said of his colleague.
