Enea Bastianini of Gresini Ducati won his third race of the 2022 MotoGP season in Le Mans, while Francesco Bagnaia wrecked out immediately after losing the lead.
At the beginning of the race, Jack Miller took the holeshot from #2 on the grid, however quickly fell back polesitter Bagnaia on the sister factory Ducati and third-placed Gresini machine of Bastianini, laying the stage for a two-horse duel for win.
In the middle of the race, Bastianini began to put weight on the Spanish GP champion, with the two riding just a few tenths apart on the 4.1km circuit.
Bastianini made advances into the Dunlop chicane with seven circuits to go, only for Bagnaia to retake the place a few turns later.
Bagnaia, on the other hand, would squander his work and effort by running wide at Turn 8 and then crashing off his motorbike at Turn 14 at the completion of the lap.
Bastiania strolled to a 2.7s triumph over Miller, the lone remaining factory Ducati, contributing to his triumphs in the Qatar season opening and the Americas GP at Austin.
Aleix Espargaro of Aprilia secured his 4th pole position of the season after holding off defending champion Fabio Quartararo in the second half of the race.
With a bad start from fourth on the grid, Yamaha racer Quartararo dropped to the lower position of the top 10, but was capable of reclaiming a few of the lost positions – despite being denied a home pole position by championship contender Espargaro by just over a tenth of a second.
After returning from a three-place grid penalty, countryman Johann Zarco placed fifth on the Pramac Ducati, overtaking the leading Honda of Marc Marquez near the end of the race.
Takaaki Nakagami of LCR Honda equaled his best showing of the season in 7th, place ahead of Brad Binder on the lone remaining KTM. Miguel Oliveira, Binder’s teammate, and Raul Fernandez and Remy Gardner of Tech 3 all struggled to complete the race.
VR46’s Luca Marini and Maverick Vinales on the second Aprilia finished the top 10, although Pol Espargaro had to settle for 11th after having to slow down his Honda to avoid striking Oliveira’s damaged KTM.
Suzuki had a dreadful day, with both Alex Rins and Joan Mir falling out of the race while in the top ten, only days after the Japanese manufacturer declared its intention to retire from MotoGP after 2022.
