In order to encourage women in racing, Formula 1 plans to launch an all-female racing series as early upcoming season.
In order to provide female racers the chance to compete at the highest levels of racing, Formula 1 plans to launch an all-female racing series.
Only a few weeks after the third season of the W Series was cancelled owing to financial difficulties, it is claimed that F1 is very close to creating their own championship as early as upcoming season. However, this would still require FIA permission.
The W Series’ 2022 season ended with three rounds remaining because of financial difficulties: one at the US Grand Prix weekend and a doubleheader at the Mexican Grand Prix.
In an effort to finish the season, the W Series’ organisers had expected to find a solution to the financial troubles. Red Bull reportedly had plans to support the series, but RacingNews365 reports that these plans were rejected.
Williams development racer Jamie Chadwick won her third straight W Series championship thanks to the early season’s end.
Formula 1 wants to increase the opportunities for women in racing
The possibility of an all-female motor sport would significantly help Formula 1 overcome some of the previous criticisms.
F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali came under fire earlier this year for underestimating the likelihood that a female racing driver would join the sport in the future.
“Realistically speaking, I don’t see – unless something that would be like a sort of meteorite coming into the earth – a girl in Formula 1 in the next five years,” commented Domenicali at the Belgian Grand Prix.
Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes demonstrated his sorrow at the end of the W Series before this weekend’s United States Grand Prix and urged the F1 executives to increase their efforts to support female drivers.
“There is not enough representation across the board, within the industry,” Hamilton told media.
“There’s not really a pathway for those young, amazing drivers to even get to Formula 1, and then you have some people who say we’re never going to see a female F1 driver ever. So that’s not a good narrative to be putting out.
“So, I think we need to be doing more, and with the organisation, with Formula 1 and Liberty [Media] doing so well it’s not a lot for them to be able to help out in that space.”
