Martin Brundle believes that the changes at Ferrari will make competitors “smile,” highlighting the lack of consistency at the team, since the silly season between Formula 1 team managers is currently taking place.
In his assessment of current Team Principal changes, Martin Brundle thinks that Mattia Binotto’s departure from Ferrari will be advantageous to Red Bull and Mercedes.
After Binotto left Ferrari, team managers experienced a “silly season,” with Frederic Vasseur being appointed as his replacement and Andreas Seidl leaving McLaren to become CEO of Sauber.
The timing of these modifications, in Brundle’s opinion, will be beneficial for Mercedes and Red Bull, two of Ferrari’s main competitors.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Brundle stated, “I’m not quite clear why Ferrari would choose now to have a month without a manager.” “I do think that Binotto should have been given more time.
“If I was Mercedes or Red Bull right now, I’d be smiling because continuity is everything.”
According to the pundit, teams should be more cautious when changing key members of their workforce due to the longer F1 seasons.
He continued, “You have to be careful of these sea changes of personnel as Formula 1 seasons get longer and more intense.
“Mercedes have got real continuity, as have Red Bull in key personnel. Vasseur has got to go in and find his way, get established, understand, and it’s a tall order.
“It doesn’t matter who you are, it’s going to take time unless you are a part of the fabric like [former boss Stefano] Domenicali was and like Binotto has been.
“It is such a fundamental change and it will destabilise them in the short term, it has to. Everybody will be slightly off balance thinking, where do they stand, and what’s next. They’ll be in limbo.”
Norris will be wondering why Seidl jumped ship
Andrea Stella, an experienced racing engineer, will assume the position of Team Principal when Seidl moves to Sauber.
Brundle, though, believes the change could be terrible news for Norris, who has already expressed his dissatisfaction with the team’s work to break into the top three.
“There’s no doubt about it, losing Seidl is bad news for McLaren going forward,” said Brundle.
“He’s had a long term relationship with the Volkswagen group with Porsche so I can understand what he’s done and I can understand why McLaren wanted to expedite that.
“The big thing for McLaren is their new wind tunnel in 2024. So Lando will be looking at it thinking, why has Andreas jumped ship? What has Andreas seen at Audi, that he much prefers to McLaren.
“Lando is very close to Zak (Brown) and he is doing a great job there, there’s a good structure at McLaren. I don’t panic in the slightest for them, but you can’t read this as good news.”
