Fabio Quartararo took control of the title race at the Portimao rollercoaster, and Alex Rins made an amazing performance.
Fabio Quartararo’s defense of his World Championship began with a bang as MotoGPTM returned to Europe for the Portuguese GP in 2022 after a fairly rocky start to the year. Enea Bastianini (Gresini Racing MotoGPTM), who did not see the finish line, lost control of the championship battle to the factory Yamaha racer, who was in command as the field approached the Algarve International Circuit.
The Frenchman had complained about the M1’s low top speed throughout the first races in Asia and the Americas, but those issues appeared to have been resolved as soon as Quartararo sprinted out to an unstoppable lead at Portimao.
Johann Zarco of Prima Pramac Racing completed a French one-two, and Aleix Espargaro of Aprilia Racing returned to the podium after he had previously won in Argentina just few weeks earlier. Espargaro took advantage of an accident between Jack Miller of the Ducati Lenovo Team and Joan Mir of the Team Suzuki Ecstar. Suzuki’s Alex Rins, who finished fourth after starting from the back of the grid, delivered the performance of the day and perhaps the entire season despite finishing outside the top 3.
Following the races in the southern region of Portugal, Quartararo took the lead in the Championship, followed by Rins, who was level on points with him.
