Dragon Ball fans have always known that Bulma is a force to be reckoned with. She may not be a warrior like Goku or Vegeta, but she’s always been the brains behind the operation. Since the very first chapter of the manga, she’s been a driving force in the story, using her intelligence and ingenuity to help the Z-Fighters on their adventures. But what fans may not have realized is that, in an alternate timeline, Bulma could have been the series’ greatest supervillain.
That timeline was explored in Dragon Ball GT, the controversial sequel series to Dragon Ball Z. While GT isn’t considered canon by creator Akira Toriyama, it still has a dedicated fanbase who appreciate its unique take on the Dragon Ball universe. And in one episode of GT, Bulma is turned into a villain – and it’s terrifying.
The episode in question is number 37, and it sees Bulma corrupted by GT’s main villain, a Machine Mutant named Baby. Baby has possessed the body of Vegeta, creating the immensely powerful fusion known as Baby-Vegeta, and he’s also laid eggs inside the minds of everyone on Earth, effectively making them part of his hive-mind. With the entire world under his control, every action they take is geared towards benefiting him and his evil plan to conquer the universe.
But Baby needs someone to help him run his empire, and he chooses Bulma for the job. He recognizes her genius and sees the potential for her to create technologies that will make his rule even more efficient. And in this timeline, Bulma doesn’t use her intelligence for good – she uses it for evil.
As a supervillain, Bulma is ruthless and terrifying. She’s hyper-focused on making Baby more powerful and making his entire empire run as efficiently as possible. She comes up with ideas that even Baby hadn’t considered, like the Blutz Wave Generator, and her intelligence and ruthlessness surpasses even his. In this timeline, Bulma is a force to be reckoned with – and one that even the Z-Fighters would struggle to defeat.
Of course, this timeline isn’t the main timeline of the series, and it’s unlikely that Bulma will ever become a supervillain in the canon Dragon Ball story. But it’s interesting to consider what could have been. Bulma has always been a complex character, with a dark streak that’s been hinted at throughout the series. She fell in love with Vegeta when he was still a murderous villain, and she shot Goku in the head when they first met, not realizing he was a Saiyan. When Bulma commits herself to something, she finds a way to make it happen – even if it seems impossible. And while her power level may be practically non-existent, her intelligence and resourcefulness make her one of the most dangerous characters in the series. Who knows what could happen if she ever turned to the dark side for real?
