Despite winning the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday, Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia thinks he needs to “be more like a machine” to clinch the 2022 MotoGP championship.
Bagnaia earned two DNFs thus far in 2022, following wrecking out of the Qatar Grand Prix in March and scrapping for win with Gresini’s Enea Bastianini at the French Grand Prix two weeks ago.
Coming into this weekend’s home round at Mugello, he was 46 points behind the leaders in the overall standings, but after blasting to triumph on Sunday, he has cut that deficit to 41 points.
“I made more mistakes, so I have to be more like a machine already from this race,” Bagnaia said when questioned if he, Fabio Quartararo, and Aleix Espargaro – who followed him on the podium on Sunday – are now the major title competitors.
“I can say yes [us three are the favourites], but I would like to put also Enea [in that group].”
Bagnaia’s Le Mans error occurred just as he was breaking through with his 2022 Ducati after a difficult start to the season figuring out how to set up the new motorbike.
Bagnaia was considered to be a favourite for triumph in Sunday’s race, with Mugello being a stronghold for Ducati.
Despite the blow to his championship aspirations caused by his Le Mans disaster, Bagnaia claims he faced no extra stress heading to Mugello.
“For sure for the championship it was important to take points this race,” Bagnaia added.
“But I have to say I was not feeling more pressure. The pressure is always there, we are doing a job where you have to live with pressure.
“But when you are enjoying your thing, mistakes can happen. But the good thing is to restart and don’t think about your problems.
“Just think about the things you enjoy and I really enjoyed this weekend a lot.
“It’s not always easy because sometimes you can be angry, like I was yesterday afternoon after the qualifying. But you have to be positive always and mistakes can happen.”
