Will Lewis Hamilton’s prediction come true over the course of the final 9 races? Hamilton “actually thinks” that Mercedes can win a Grand Prix this season.
Despite consistently closing the distance to front-runners Red Bull and Ferrari, Jean Alesi is sceptical that Mercedes will be in a position to capture a Grand Prix on merit in 2022.
Mercedes had a challenging beginning of the most recent ground effect period in Formula One, with their W13 suffering greatly from the porpoising phenomenon early in the season.
The crew seems to have made significant progress at recent events after numerous set-up experiments and hurriedly implemented modifications.
In France and Hungary, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell both finished second, and Russell also won the pole position the previous race.
Hamilton has said that he “really expects” Mercedes can defeat Red Bull and Ferrari to a race victory this year given the squad’s rate of progress.
In 2022, is Mercedes capable of winning a race?
Alesi, who has competed in more than 200 Grand Prix races and has driven for teams like Ferrari, Benetton, and Sauber, believes it will be challenging for the Silver Arrows to make it to the finish line.
“By experience, when a car is born with problems, you’re not able to fix it,” the Frenchman told Give Me Sport.
“You can make a compromise, but a compromise in Formula 1 doesn’t work, you know.
“I don’t really believe they are able to be a winning team, winning Grands Prix, before the end of the championship under normal circumstances.”
Hamilton and Russell make an impression on Alesi
Alesi did, however, highlight Mercedes’ development from preseason testing, where they debuted their distinct sidepod-less design, through the last races before the summer vacation.
“It’s easy for me to say, but everybody was shocked,” he said of the outfit’s early-season form.
“When they presented the car in Bahrain, everybody said, ‘Oh my God, they have made something very special and they’re going to be untouchable’. But lap after lap, they found out the car was nowhere.
“To see Lewis driving a car like that was sometimes embarrassing, because Lewis is a seven-time World Champion. But to see his capacity to still improve the car, that was impressive.
“In Hungary, it was fantastic to see George on pole position and Lewis fighting towards the front.”
