Fabio Quartararo stresses ‘can’t make mistakes now’

Fabio Quartararo, the reigning MotoGP title holder, has warned that he and Yamaha “cannot afford to make mistakes” in the coming races if they are to preserve their title.

Quartararo has only one pole finish through the first four races of the competitive 2022 season.

Quartararo placed 9th in Qatar, 8th in Argentina, and 7th last time out in America due to a lack of advancement in the Yamaha package.

He is only 17 points behind race winner Enea Bastianini, but he believes that the next series of races, which begins this week with the Portuguese Grand Prix at Portimao – where he won in the previous season – must result in podiums due to the Yamaha’s suitability for the upcoming circuit layouts.

“This one is 50/50 for us, but it’s true that Jerez and Le Mans are really important tracks for us,” he said when asked by Motorsport.com if he views Portugal as the real start to his 2022 season.

“We are not allowed to make mistakes.

“If we want to fight for the championship, mistakes are not allowed.

“So, in this kind of track, it’s to be on the podium and make no mistakes because if not it will be difficult to arrive in a good position at the end of the year.”

The Yamaha presently has a lower maximum speed than its competitors and difficulties when stranded behind quicker bikes since the racers are unable to utilise the M1’s cornering strengths.

The M1 has a restricted operating window, according to Quartararo, which is strongly reliant on the grip available at a track.

When questioned if he expected any improvements from Yamaha now that MotoGP has been back to Europe, Quartararo stated his squad has had no deep conversations about it.

“I hope [we get some updates soon],” he added.

“At the moment I have not much news about this, but we have to because imagine I was happy to finish P7 in Austin.

“It sounds ridiculous because I was world champion last year and I was happy to finish in that position in Austin. We need to have new things.”
