After colliding with Max Verstappen on Lap 7, Lewis Hamilton’s chances of competing at the front during the Brazilian Grand Prix appeared to have worsened. What the Mercedes racer was thinking at the time has been revealed to the public.
After his crash with Max Verstappen at the Brazilian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton has stated his big worry.
When the race resumed after a Safety Car stoppage on Lap 7, the former main rivals faced off. They made contact, and both moved backward in the order.
As a result of his ability to regain positions, Hamilton finally completed the race in second place, giving Mercedes a 1-2 finish with teammate George Russell taking home the triumph in his first Formula One race.
Verstappen was given a five-second time penalty by the officials for his involvement in the accident with Hamilton, which forced him to drop farther back in the pack.
After disobeying a team directive to allow fellow Red Bull racer Sergio Perez pass on the last lap, the Dutchman ultimately placed in sixth place.
Hamilton recalls what happened with Verstappen
After the race, when asked about the accident, Hamilton confessed that he had been afraid that he could be forced to withdraw and thus endanger Mercedes’ chances of finishing 1-2.
When questioned for his view on the crash, Hamilton told the reporters, “I don’t really have much of an opinion about it, to be honest.”
“For me, all I thought in that moment was that I thought the car would have to retire. Because I felt something, the rear wasn’t feeling the same after that.
“And for me, it was like, I was going to lose the team the 1-2, and so that’s all I could think of.
“So I was driving over across the grass, back onto the track and all I could think of was how can I get back to giving the team that incredible result.
“So, for me, it’s kind of, again, not how you fall, it’s how you get back up, and I’m proud of the job we’ve all done and huge congratulations to George.”
Mercedes: the Brazil result is crucial before winter
Mercedes’ victory in Brazil is the team’s first victory of the 2022 season after at times being faced with difficulties.
Hamilton believes that in order for the Brackley-based team to get ready for 2023, achieving the 1-2 result was essential.
“It is the most important thing for us to have this result,” the seven-time World Champion said.
“This is a massive boost to the whole team’s morale. Going into the winter, the team know that we’re on the right track, and we are still the best team.
“We will get back to having this more consistent, I think, next year, and I’m excited for that battle.”
