In the 2023 FIA World Endurance Championship, two of the sport’s most famous stars will work collaboratively, with Jacques Villeneuve expected to race a Vanwall-branded Hypercar.

The 1997 Formula 1 Championship Winner will team up with Tom Dillmann and Esteban Guerrieri in a non-hybrid Vanwall Vandervell 680 entered by Dutch team ByKolles Racing, according to the official 2023 WEC entry list, which was announced on Wednesday.

Tony Vandervell established Vanwall in 1954, and the team participated in the first ten years of the Formula 1 World Championship, earning the first Constructors’ Championship in 1958 with victories from Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks.

Nevertheless, the team also lost member Stuart Lewis-Evans at the season-ending Moroccan Grand Prix, and with Vandervell’s health deteriorating, he decided to shut the team down in 1961.

Varying motorsport career of Villeneuve

Villeneuve has had a nomadic career since quitting Formula One in the middle of 2006. He has participated in races for sports cars, NASCAR, V8 Supercars, Formula E, and rallycross.

In order to commemorate the 25th anniversary of his 1997 championship victory, the 51-year-old also made a comeback to F1 last year, driving a 2021 Alpine A521 at Monza.

The Canadian, who took first place in the 2008 24 Hours of Le Mans while driving a Peugeot 908, will be attempting to earn his first 24 Hours of Le Mans after previously winning the Indy 500 in 1995.

The series’ flagship Hypercar category will feature a total of 13 vehicles from 5 big manufacturers, which is a huge improvement over the 2022 WEC season, when just three Hypercars participated in each race.

Eight former F1 racers, notably Kamui Kobayashi, who continues to race for Toyota and Antonio Giovinazzi, who has entered Ferrari’s new WEC program, are also included in the Hypercar category in addition to Villeneuve.
