Following the squad’s consecutive points results in Austria and Britain, Kevin Magnussen is excited to see what Haas’ expected update package would bring.
When Haas eventually makes improvements to their car, Kevin Magnussen believes they might overtake McLaren and Alpine in the F1 standings.
In contrast to the majority of F1 squads, Haas has yet to make any significant modifications to the racetrack during the first half of the season.
This is because, before implementing an update package later in the year, the team wanted to thoroughly comprehend the VF-22 and maximise its potential.
Despite this stagnation, Haas just recorded their first double-point results of the season in Austria and Britain, the latter representing their largest haul to date.
Can Haas become the leaders in the midfield?
With 34 points, Haas is in seventh in the rankings, 17 points behind Alfa Romeo, and 30 points after Alpine and McLaren.
Magnussen has his sights set on moving up the order given Haas’ current point-scoring performance and the impending upgrade.
“I mean, no one knows what’s possible, but certainly, in [Austria], we’ve been sort of – I don’t know – the fourth- or fifth-fastest team,” Magnussen told media, including RacingNews365.com, when asked what he expects from the planned upgrades.
“This weekend, Alpine, McLaren and ourselves have looked very strong in that midfield group. If we can stick with them, it’s a massive jump for us.
“We are on [a] par with them now and we don’t have an upgrade, so hopefully, when we get that upgrade, it can put us in front of that midfield.”
Schumacher playing a role after his points breakthrough
Magnussen said that Haas’ success over the previous two weekends was also boosted by driver Mick Schumacher’s contributions.
“We need both drivers to be performing, because it’s tough when you’re the only one scoring points, you know?” Magnussen continued.
“It’s just better for the team if both are performing and he certainly has taken a big step [during] the last two races.”
When asked if Schumacher seemed more assured following his first-ever points finish, Magnussen responded: “I’m not sure. I’m only thinking about myself, and Mick has probably been doing the same.”
Magnussen is now ranked 11th with 22 points, 10 ahead of Schumacher.
