Laureus World Sport Awards nominees include F1 champions Verstappen and Mercedes

The Laureus World Sport Awards have nominated Formula 1 winner Max Verstappen and Mercedes.

Mercedes has been nominated for World Team of the Year, with Verstappen nominated for World Sportsman of the Year.

The Dutchman won the 2021 F1 drivers’ championship in dramatic fashion, finishing ahead of Lewis Hamilton, while Mercedes won the constructors’ championship for the ninth time in a row.

Verstappen will face footballer Robert Lewandowski, tennis player Novak Djokovic, and NFL players Tom Brady, Caeleb Dressel, and Eliud Kipchoge.

Sebastian Vettel received the prize in 2014, after Michael Schumacher won it in 2002 and 2004.

In the year 2020, Lewis Hamilton and Lionel Messi, a footballer, split the award.

After winning the award in 2018, Mercedes has been nominated for the eighth year in a row.

Argentina’s men’s football team, Barcelona’s women’s football team, China’s Olympic diving team, Italy’s men’s football team, and the Milwaukee Bucks will all be competing against the German company.
