Medical crews in Saudi Arabia have given Charles Leclerc the all-clear following his terrifying crash in second practice.
After a high-speed incident during practice for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Ferrari has verified that Charles Leclerc has passed all medical exams.
In FP2, the Monegasque driver lost control of his SF21 while negotiating the fast flick at Turn 22. As he swooped through the left-hander, the back of his car became light.
Leclerc was left a passenger when he raced off backwards into the barriers, unable to catch it at such high speeds. His car’s momentum caused the entire back and right-hand side of the chassis to receive the brunt of the impact when he slammed into them hard.
Leclerc was unhurt and checked in on team radio before climbing out. He was then brought to the hospital for precautionary physical checks.
“Charles came back to the hospitality after routine medical checks having been given the all-clear by the doctors,” read a short statement from the team.
Will he require a new chassis?
Ferrari has since confirmed that Leclerc will be allowed to finish the race with the same chassis and engine as last weekend, without the need for a change or a grid penalty.
This information was released in the hours following the collision, after the team had returned the crashed car to the garage for further investigation.
Ironically, if that situation changes, the spare chassis available is the one Leclerc was driving in Qatar until Saturday. After a crack was discovered in his original chassis, he was given a new one.
Ferrari’s Mattia Binotto confirmed that that chassis would be repaired and brought to Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi as the spare.
