Marc Marquez: The audience “picked me up” after a near-crash in Jerez

Marc Marquez claims that the “Spanish audience picked me up” when he suffered a stunning near-crash while braking at Jerez’s last turn during the MotoGP Spanish Grand Prix.

Throughout most of Sunday’s Spanish GP at Jerez, the Honda racer was competing for the last podium spot with Ducati’s Jack Miller and Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro.

On lap 21 of 25, Marquez attempted to pass Miller at Jerez’s final curve, but he lost the front end while braking and nearly fell out.

However, the Spaniard was able to avoid the accident, something he confesses he hasn’t been able to achieve since fracturing his arm severely two years ago in Jerez.

“In the last two years I didn’t [make a] save in that mode,” Marquez, who finished fourth in the end behind Espargaro, said when asked about the save.

“When I will save on the right side, then it will be different. I saved on the left side, the left side I feel ok.

“But it’s true even like this I was able to control that, but I think the Spanish crown picked me up because I was completely on the floor. Both wheels were sliding, but suddenly I picked up the bike. But we will see.

“Now we need to understand this result as a positive thing and another motivation.”

Marquez’s fourth-place finish in Jerez was his highlight of the season, but he was still more than 12 seconds behind racing driver Francesco Bagnaia.

He confesses that his attempts to adjust the 2022 Honda to his riding style were unsuccessful, and that he now has fit himself to the bike, but that implies HRC “doesn’t know where to go with development right now.”

“It’s true that at the moment we are not ready in the championship,” he continued, having previously stated that he isn’t ready to fight for race wins yet on the 2022 Honda.

“There are two riders that are much faster than everybody, that is [Fabio] Quartararo and Pecco.

“They are two guys that in the pre-season [were the favourites], and they are there.

“But it’s true that we are getting closer and closer. Still, we don’t know the direction, we need to understand many things with this new bike.

“I try to adapt this bike to my riding style, so now I’m trying to work on my riding style and ride in the best way possible with another riding style.

“It’s true that I’m struggling, but I can survive and get good result. Fourth before you’d say is not a good result, but now in this moment it’s a good result.”
