Aprilia, the only manufacturer still making technological compromises, had its greatest ever beginning to a four-stroke MotoGP season with Aleix Espargaro finishing fourth, while partner Maverick Vinales finished twelfth.

Yamaha, the defending world champions and double Qatar victors the year before, finished eighth with Fabio Quartararo, as unforeseen tyre pressure issues compounded the M1’s intimidating lack of top speed.
