Sergio Perez is hoping that his year of acclimating to the Red Bull environment will pay off in 2022, as he attempts to take advantage of Formula One’s new rules.

After being dropped by McLaren, Perez spent the last seven F1 seasons at Force India/Racing Point, he was given the opportunity to comeback to front-running machinery when Red Bull decided to look outside of their own talented employees for 2021.

Perez struggled for consistency with a car that teammate Max Verstappen found far easier to use in a season of extremes, going from the high of winning in Azerbaijan to the low of being knocked out in Q1 in the Netherlands.

Perez is feeling more ready for Red Bull’s second season

Perez is sure that despite being trailed Verstappen by an estimate of 0.513 seconds in qualifying previous season and scoring less than half of the Dutchman’s 395.5 points, he will offer a more competitive and consistent 2022 campaign.

“You automatically feel more settled going into your second year with a team,” Perez remarked, referring to this weekend’s season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.

“I feel more prepared because I now know exactly how the team operate and the Red Bull Racing philosophy, so that makes a difference.”

He went on to comment: “I know the important thing is that I am consistent throughout the year – I am up for the fight.”

Perez is interested to check where Red Bull stands in the Formula One rankings

After applying some eye-catching modifications to their RB18, Red Bull finished the pre-season at the top of the timesheets, with Perez and Verstappen winning the last morning and afternoon sessions in Bahrain.

Perez praised Red Bull’s planning as “really good,” and he’s looking forward to seeing where he and the team stand once the racing begins.

“Every team is in the same position starting the season, in that we don’t know the car as much because of the shake-up in regulations, but we had a really good test, both in Bahrain and Barcelona,” said Perez.

“It will be interesting to see where everyone is come Sunday, when the flag comes down, and I think it will make for a good race.”
