During the 2021 season, Sergio Perez was required to serve as Max Verstappen’s supporting character, but following his pole position in Saudi Arabia, could the tables be set to turn?
Sergio Perez may have a better chance this season versus Max Verstappen given that he has a car that is “more suited to his style,” according to Red Bull manager Christian Horner.
With a blistering-hot lap in the dying minutes of Saturday’s qualifying session, Perez secured a surprising pole position for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
The 32-year-old therefore ended a 219-race wait for his first pole and deprived Ferrari rival Charles Leclerc the opportunity to make it two-in-a-row.
On Sunday, he’ll make history as the first Mexican driver to begin a Formula One race from the pole position.
Horner: Red Bull’s RB18 is not quite as quirky
Perez only beat Verstappen in races where the Dutchman was forced to withdraw throughout the 2021 season.
However, according to Horner, he has been given a car this season that is ideally suited to his racing style.
“Whatever he had for lunch, breakfast and dinner last night, we’re going to give him the same tomorrow,” joked Horner, speaking to Sky Sports F1.
“It was a phenomenal performance from him and I’m just so, so happy for him. He’s worked incredibly hard.
“I think the car this year is more suited to his style; it’s not quite as quirky as last year’s car. [But] he’s done a great job there.”
Perez has gained confidence as a result of his performance
Horner also anticipates Perez to gain a great deal of confidence from his first-ever pole, as he has in the past.
“Well, Saturdays, I think, by his own admission, have never been the strongest part of his armoury,” added Horner.
“He’s always come alive on race day, so to deliver that kind of performance, at this circuit, that’s great for him.
“It will do his confidence a world of good and we just need to convert that into a great result tomorrow.”
