The ongoing rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, according to Ralf Schumacher, might come to an unexpected change in the Mercedes dynamic.
After first 4 races this season, Ralf Schumacher thinks Lewis Hamilton may have to undertake more soul-searching, with George Russell leading.
Russell finished fourth at Imola, while Hamilton finished 13th, and Schumacher believes Hamilton was left wondering what the problem was.
In his Sky Sport Germany blog, Schumacher said, “We have to talk about Lewis Hamilton.”
“He has to wonder why George Russell is so much faster than him. A 13th place is, of course, not what Hamilton is aiming for.”
Schumacher: Mercedes may undergo modifications
Hamilton, according to Schumacher, must first acknowledge that he is being defeated by his rookie colleague.
“He has to admit that Russell is the better driver right now,” he said, and pondered whether the dynamic in the team may start to shift in the coming races.
“If things continue like this over the next few weeks, things will also get exciting in the team.”
He suggested: “There may be changes in the ranking.”
There are no plans to retire Hamilton
Despite the fact that the momentum is with Russell and Hamilton appears to be a long way from a title challenge, Schumacher believes the 37-year-old should not have accepted the chance to retire from the motorsport at the end of 2021.
“I am far from saying that Hamilton missed the point of retiring,” he commented.
“Lewis continues to be one of the best drivers in the field, that’s clear. However, the new concepts require the drivers to adapt a little. Hamilton is not used to that.
“Russell, on the other hand, is a young driver and they obviously get along better with it.”
