Sainz is not in a good position as qualifying approaches

Although Ferrari appears to be among the best cars in the world ahead of the 2022 Formula One season, Carlos Sainz has confessed that he still has much to do.

Before testing for the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix, Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz says he’s having trouble extracting optimal one-lap speed from his car.

During Friday’s second practise session, the Spaniard’s teammate, Charles Leclerc, set a time that was half a second faster than his.

As a result, on Friday evening, Leclerc addressed the media with optimism, while Sainz was forced to criticise his own performance.

Sainz left with homework to do

“I think it’s been a positive start for the team. We’re reconfirming the good feeling that we had since testing,” Sainz said of the first day of action.

“From my side, honestly, FP2 was quite tough. I still don’t understand fully the car in the short runs. I’m struggling with the front tyre, with the warm-up and with a lot of mid-corner understeer.

“I’m still not driving it the way I should, in an ideal manner, so there’s quite a bit of homework to do.

“I need to work and make sure that I find some lap time for tomorrow.”

Will Ferrari compete for the pole position?

Despite Ferrari’s outstanding speed, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen seized the lead during the FP2 session on Friday evening.

Sainz, on the other hand, is convinced that he and Ferrari will be able to extract some further performance ahead of the pole position shootout.

“I think I know where we need to work on, and I know which areas we need to improve, and hopefully we can take the right steps going into tomorrow and take actually a step forward,” Sainz continued.

“At the moment, I’m not entirely happy, and I’m not in a great place with the driving and the feeling with the front tyres.”
