The head of F1 defends calendar modifications, saying, “I’m not selling the sport’s soul”

The Formula 1 schedule has undergone a number of modifications recently, with new locations being introduced while others having to make way. Stefano Domenicali has explained himself in response to this criticism.

The sport’s schedule modifications have been confirmed by F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.

In latest years, the calendar has continued to change, adding new courses like the upcoming Las Vegas track for 2023 but also putting some existing venues at risk of losing their spots.

The historic Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium and the French Circuit Paul Ricard are two facilities whose future is questionable.

With Lewis Hamilton having recently expressed his worries, the sport has also come under fire for travelling to nations where human rights have been questioned.

Domenicali denies “selling the soul” of F1

Domenicali has refuted claims that the schedule modifications are harming the motorsport in response to any objections.

“I am not selling the soul of Formula 1,” Domenicali told German publication Bild.

“That is the normal change. We are opening up to the whole world.”

The head of Formula 1 has recognised that financial considerations play a significant role in choices, but he emphasises that other factors are also taken into account.

“Money is important everywhere. For us too,” he added.

“But we don’t just look at it, the whole package has to be right. If we only looked at the bank account, the racing calendar would definitely look different.”

Will Germany make a return to the calendar?

F1 has recently added additional venues, such the debut Miami Grand Prix earlier in the 2022 season.

Germany is one nation that has not appeared on the calendar since 2020, and Domenicali has claimed that the chances of a comeback in 2023 are not encouraging.

“If I don’t make a call, I see and hear little [about it],” he said.

The Italian has not, though, ruled out the possibility of Hockenheim or the Nurburgring making a return in the future.

“I would like us to return,” Domenicali concluded.
