Could McLaren’s recent F1 lineup compete in any of these prestigious events given that they race in various series, such as Formula E and IndyCar?
Since the squad just joined IndyCar, Formula E, and Extreme E, it is now taking part in more championships than before.
The team will enter 4 cars in IndyCar the next season in an effort to challenge top competitors like Chip Ganassi and Andretti for the title.
Why does the team need an IndyCar team, though, when Formula 1 will have a record-breaking three US races the following season? It all comes down to experience in the North American market, according to CEO Zak Brown.
In a new interview with McLaren, he stated, “When we look at what gets our fans excited, where we sell our beautiful road cars, and what our corporate partners want, as far as market penetration goes, North America comes right at the top of the list.”
“It wasn’t long ago, F1 wasn’t very popular in North America. It’s amazing what’s happened in a short period of time, a lot thanks to Drive to Survive – the Netflix show.
“But we felt we wanted to have a larger presence in North America than all the other F1 teams, so we’re the only team in IndyCar.”
Lando participating in the Indianapolis 500? Brown: I see it happening
When Brown entered McLaren in 2016, he demonstrated that they were working differently by allowing Fernando Alonso to participate in the Indy 500 the next year.
Norris has set his sights on repeating it in the future because it was the first time in many years that an F1 racer had performed anything similar during the regular season.
Brown added: “Lando has mentioned he’d like to do the Indy 500 one day and of course, one of my first days on the job was bringing over Fernando Alonso to do the Indy 500, which was such an awesome experience for everybody.
“The calendars are pretty crazy these days, but I think racing drivers like to drive racing cars. And yeah, I could see that day happening.”
