Due to strong rain conditions, the 2022 MotoGP Indonesian Grand Prix has been postponed, with the Mandalika International Street Circuit submerged.
The comeback of MotoGP to Indonesia for the first time since 1997 has been postponed indefinitely as torrential rain pelted the Mandalika circuit only half an hour before the race was scheduled to start.
The race was originally scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. local time (7:00 a.m. GMT), but it was postponed until 3:10 p.m.
Nevertheless, because to the significant amount of standing water on the circuit, the rain has not stopped, and pitlane remains closed.
The race officials has not published a new timetable.
The race had previously been shortened from 27 to 20 laps because to concerns about the track’s safety in the heat.
Although many Moto2 riders have reported some surface break-up at the final lap of their race, race direction information on exactly what the difficulties with the asphalt are has been scarce.
The Moto2 race, won by Somkiat Chantra, was cut from 25 laps to 16 laps just minutes before the start.
Following many troubles with the asphalt during the pre-season test in February, the course was largely resurfaced.
The comeback of MotoGP to Indonesia has been plagued by problems all weekend.
After experiencing difficulties with its standard 2022 tyres in February’s pre-season test, Michelin was compelled to bring a stronger tyre carcass not seen since 2018 to handle the intense heat at Mandalika.
This has resulted in serious rear grip concerns for some manufacturers, most notably Honda, which won the Mandalika test in February with Pol Espargaro.
The Spaniard, who started 16th following teammate Marc Marquez, stated on Saturday that Michelin’s answer to its tyre issues was “unfair” to HRC, and that he feared he might not be able to complete the race owing to the pressure his lack of rear grip is putting on the RC213V’s front-end.
Marquez was involved in a severe crash during the warm-up practise on Sunday morning when the back end of his car gave way around Turn 7.
After suffering a concussion, the six-time world champion has been ruled out of the race.
