Where Russell places among the “Mr. Saturday” laps for his first F1 pole

Where does so-called “Mr. Saturday” place George Russell’s pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix? George Russell is well-known for his impressive qualifying results.

George Russell of Mercedes feels that his pole position lap at the Hungarian Grand Prix was his biggest accomplishment in Formula 1 qualifying from a “pure driving” perspective.

With a late run in Q3, Russell secured his first F1 pole at the Hungaroring, denying Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz a second pole position of the season by 0.044 seconds.

Russell finished third in the race, following squad member Lewis Hamilton and pole-sitter Max Verstappen. It was Mercedes’ first pole position of the year.

Russell earned the nickname “Mr. Saturday” throughout his three years at Williams for to his strong qualifying efforts, which included second and third places in 2021 in lower middle cars in Belgium and Russia, respectively.

Russell considers the best lap

At Spa in 2021, Russell split Verstappen and Hamilton for the championship by qualifying second in the Williams despite terrible conditions.

Russell placed second when the race was called off owing to intense rainfall, despite only having finished one circuit.

Russell was capable of qualifying third in Russia in rainy circumstances behind Lando Norris and Sainz on a jumbled grid for what would ultimately be F1’s final trip to Sochi.

Russell feels that the Budapest lap was the finest of the three, though.

“I think the nature of this circuit when you get everything absolutely hooked up nothing comes close because it’s so fast, so flowing,” he explained to media, including RacingNews365.com.

“Every corner leads on to the next so it’s difficult to compare very different conditions, but [on] pure driving probably the one today [was the best].”

Hard to match Pole and Spa feelings

Russell said that he thought it would be challenging to replicate the emotions of both his first pole position and that particular lap at Spa because they would both be significant turning points in his career.

“I don’t think the feeling of this pole and the feeling of that Spa lap that I have qualifyings that will ever come close to these two feelings,” Russell explained.

“Obviously this was my first. As a team we struggled so much at Williams, we were so far behind [there that] to get that second was massive.

“This is what racing is about. This is why I wake up every single day and I want to be World Champion, because feeling like this is something you can’t really dream of.”
