Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes was capable of earning a pole position in Bahrain for the first race of the 2022 season, taking advantage of Red Bull’s double retirement.
After qualifying fifth and ninth for the season opening, Lewis Hamilton reckons Mercedes will be able to achieve better their performance at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix following weekend.
During the last circuits of Sunday evening’s curtain-raiser in Bahrain, Hamilton took advantage of a double DNF for opponents Red Bull and climbed to the podium.
Throughout the weekend, though, it was evident that Mercedes only possessed the third-fastest package, with Ferrari and Red Bull managing to get and remain ahead.
Mercedes is dependable, while Ferrari and Red Bull are “much faster”
When questioned what he gained after finishing a long race at the Bahrain International Circuit, Hamilton said Ferrari and Red Bull had a distinct advantage in terms of performance.
Before a late Safety Car erased the lead and pulled the Silver Arrows back into contention, Hamilton and driver George Russell were more than half a minute behind leader – and eventual champion – Charles Leclerc.
“We’ve got a reliable car, and they’re much faster, but we kind of knew that already,” said Hamilton, speaking to select members of the media, including RacingNews365.com.
“The car was very hard to drive, but it could always be worse.”
Hamilton anticipates a challenging weekend in Saudi Arabia
Hamilton went on to say that he anticipates Mercedes to perform better in the Jeddah Corniche Circuit: “No, I don’t think so. But we, of course, have learned a lot from this week .”
The forthcoming race in Saudi Arabia will provide Mercedes with a test that the team fears may not fit their car, as it will take place on a street circuit with a high top-end speed requirement.
“[Ferrari’s] straight-line speed – as well as [Red] Bull’s – is very quick, and their performance through the corners is quite a bit different to ours,” he went on to comment.
“I’m hoping for the next race that we do manage to find some improvements, but it’s a fundamental issue that is going to take a little bit longer, I think, to fix.”
