Mick Schumacher’s “calm and methodical approach” to Formula 1 has been highlighted by Toto Wolff as a main factor for employing the former Haas driver for 2023.

With no other race seat possibilities in F1 for ’23, Schumacher was required to seek for a reserve position after losing his seat at Haas soon before the end of the 2022 season.

Wolff was amenable to the notion of Schumacher joining the team to assist Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, but he added that it would rely on what the German and his managers intended to accomplish.

Before Mercedes’ confirmation, it was revealed that Schumacher would leave the Ferrari Driver Academy after 4 seasons, allowing him to join the Brackley team, where his father Michael competed from 2010 to 2012.

Schumacher is lauded by Wolff

With his previous racing expertise also serving as a key pulling point for Mercedes and Wolff, Schumacher will conduct simulator work in addition to traveling to every race in 2023 as Hamilton and Russell’s backup.

“Mick is a talented young driver and we’re delighted to have him join the team,” Wolff said.

“He is a hard worker, has a calm and methodical approach and is still hungry to learn and improve as a driver.

“These are all important qualities and we’re excited for him to help us develop the W14.

“We also know that with two years of experience racing in Formula 1 under his belt, he will be ready to step into the car at short notice to replace either Lewis or George, should that need arise.”
