This weekend at the Hungaroring, Mercedes will be aiming for another great performance to follow up their two podium finishes in France.
Toto Wolff, the head of Mercedes, has stated that it is “impossible to forecast” the squad’s performance at this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix.
Mercedes has made considerable strides with the W13 package after having a difficult begin of the season as they pursue Red Bull and Ferrari, who are now leading the Formula One standings.
Mercedes took advantage of Charles Leclerc’s departure to earn a double pole position in France last time out despite issues throughout one lap and in the opening portions of both stints.
The Red Bull racer Sergio Perez was defeated by Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, who crossed the finish line in P2 and P3, respectively.
The French GP result helps Mercedes
Wolff is aware that improvements must be made in two additional areas if Mercedes is to be a serious contender for race victories in 2022.
“It was encouraging to score such a big haul of points in France and maximise the situation on Sunday, but we know there is much work still to do,” he said.
“The gap to the leaders on a single lap persists and we struggle more at the start of stints.
“We need to keep unlocking more performance, and by maintaining the culture, mindset and spirit that has spurred on all the hard work at the factories, I’m confident we will.
“Our reliability was good once again, and both Lewis and George were on strong form, to deliver a double podium.”
Wolff: It’s difficult to predict the Hungarian GP
After their breakthrough performance, Wolff issued a warning, pointing out that Mercedes had been surprised at a number of circuits this season because “expectations haven’t always matched up to reality.”
The crew is also apprehensive about the “extremely different” Hungaroring venue following their experience at the fast-paced Circuit Paul Ricard.
“Now we’re switching focus to Hungary and a very different circuit; tight, twisty and bumpy, almost the opposite of where we just were,” Wolff added.
“It’s hard to predict how we will fare because our expectations this year haven’t always matched up to reality, in terms of which tracks suit the W13.
“Nevertheless, we’ll give it our all and we always look forward to being in Budapest and the warm welcome we receive from the fans.”
