In a non-representative practise session at the Circuit of the Americas, Charles Leclerc won FP2 ahead of Valtteri Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo.
Although Pirelli’s development tyres were being tested during second practise at the Circuit of the Americas, Charles Leclerc finished as the fastest racer from the session.
Since the Japanese GP practise sessions were held in wet circumstances, the second practise for the US GP was designated as a Pirelli tyre test session.
Each racer was provided with two pairs of the test tyres to use, given a certain quantity of fuel, and prevented from making setup modifications.
Leclerc, Valtteri Bottas, and Daniel Ricciardo were the only racers to have used the season’s tyres at all. They were the three racers who lost out on FP1 in favour of the rookies.
These three racers set the fastest lap times during the practise, with Leclerc’s pace of 1:36.810 being many tenths of a second speedier than that of Bottas of Alfa Romeo and Daniel Ricciardo of McLaren, both of whom used Soft tyres.
Less than a tenth of a second separated the Ferrari racers’ session-best time from teammate Carlos Sainz’s best lap from practise one while using medium tyres.
Midway through the practise, both three racers changed to test with development tyres.

During the one-time, 90-minute practise, the remainder of the field was devoted to testing Pirelli tyres.
Based on whether they chose short or long runs, racers were allocated a specified amount of laps to complete, and teams were given a particular temperature to maintain their tyre blankets at.
There will be little to learn from the field, save from gaining a feel for the anticipated 2023 tyres, because each racer’s compounds and fuel loads are kept a secret.
Sainz set the standard among them, still 1.4 seconds off Leclerc’s speed but more than a second faster than Lando Norris of McLaren and Mick Schumacher of Haas.
Max Verstappen, who was recently proclaimed the winner, completed the session in eighth place, ahead of teammate Sergio Perez, Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes, and Pierre Gasly of AlphaTauri.
