The newest villains in Jujutsu Kaisen may have improved its weakest storyline

In the latest chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen, a new set of antagonists have been introduced that could have potentially fixed the flaws in the series’ worst arc, the Culling Game. Fans have expressed disappointment with the arc’s disjointed structure, which focused on individual battles in different colonies, but failed to form a cohesive whole. However, the introduction of the Empty Generals, a group of powerful sorcerers aligned with the Toh, could have provided a more unified and connected storyline.

Chapter 218 delves into the backstory of Yorozu, an ancient sorcerer possessing Megumi’s sister’s body, who defeated the Empty Generals after perfecting her cursed technique based on insects. Given the strength of Uro, a sorcerer who fought against Yuta and Ishigori in the Culling Game, it can be assumed that the Empty Generals were formidable foes who could have been introduced earlier in the arc as major antagonists for each colony. This would have made the premise of the Culling Game more interesting and prevented it from feeling like filler.

If each of the Empty Generals had been assigned as the major antagonist for a specific colony, it would have connected the protagonist’s struggles together and made the arc feel more unified. Additionally, with four of the generals corresponding to the four colonies featured in the Culling Game, and the fifth serving as a major player in the end game, this would have worked well numerically. Each fight would have felt like a true conflict between the present and the past, allowing the Culling Game’s premise to shine.

However, the introduction of the Empty Generals was too late in the story for them to have a significant impact on the plot. Yorozu had already defeated them in the past, and Sukuna in Megumi’s body has emerged as the main antagonist. If the Empty Generals had been introduced earlier, they could have fixed many of the Culling Game’s flaws and made it a more compelling arc.
