Rumiko Takahashi, a renowned manga artist known for her works such as Urusei Yatsura, Inuyasha, and Ranma 1/2, has recently been recognized and bestowed with the title of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters (Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres) by the French Ministry of Culture. This prestigious title is awarded to individuals who have distinguished themselves in the artistic or literary field, or who have contributed to the influence of arts and letters in France and around the world.
Takahashi expressed her gratitude for being recognized with such an honor and said that she was very pleased to know that her works were enjoyed by the French. She added that she will use this recognition as motivation to continue working hard and creating more manga.
Takahashi made her debut in 1978 with her manga series “Katte na Yatsura” which was published in Weekly Shonen Sunday, while she was still a student at Japan Women’s University. In the same year, she began serialization of “Urusei Yatsura” in the same magazine. She is also known for her works such as “Maison Ikkoku”, “Rin-ne”, and the currently serialized “MAO”.
Her popular manga series have also been adapted into anime, including “Urusei Yatsura”, “Maison Ikkoku”, “Ranma 1/2”, “Inuyasha”, and “Rin-ne”. The anime adaptation of “Inuyasha” also received a sequel titled “Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon”.
Takahashi joins a list of esteemed Japanese manga artists who have received the honor of being named a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters, including the late Jirou Taniguchi, the late Leiji Matsumoto, Akira Toriyama, and Go Nagai.
