Pokémon Go dev is making a real-world MH game

Niantic, the game development company famous for Pokémon Go, has partnered with Capcom to create a new augmented reality (AR) game called Monster Hunter Now. The game is based on Capcom’s Monster Hunter franchise and aims to bring the popular game’s core concept of hunting monsters into the real world through AR technology.

While details on the gameplay are scarce, Niantic has announced that players will be able to explore a real-world map and encounter monsters and resources as they navigate the game. The game follows the traditional Monster Hunter formula, where players hunt monsters and earn materials to craft weapons and armor to take on even more challenging monsters.

Combat is also a crucial element of the game, with players engaging in battles that will last a maximum of 75 seconds. Players will be able to team up with friends to take on the game’s monsters, much like in the original console game. The game will also feature a unique feature where players can hit monsters with paintballs while on the go, tagging them so that they can be battled later at home or another location.

Niantic CEO John Hanke said that the company worked closely with Capcom to create an experience that honors the legacy of Monster Hunter. Ryozo Tsujimoto, the producer of the Monster Hunter franchise, described the collaboration as a “close collaboration” between the two companies.

Niantic has previously partnered with other notable names to create AR games, such as NBA All-World and Pikmin Bloom. However, none of these games have matched the success of Pokémon Go. In June 2022, Niantic shut down several in-development projects and laid off eight percent of its staff.

Despite this setback, Niantic is continuing to develop new games, including their own original virtual pet game called Peridot, which is expected to launch in May 2023.

Monster Hunter Now is set to launch on both iOS and Android in September 2023. The game is expected to attract both Monster Hunter and Pokémon Go fans alike and may prove to be Niantic’s next big hit.
