“Tokyo Ghoul” is a dark, action-packed anime that takes place in Japan’s bustling capital city. The show is set in a world where humans and ghouls coexist, but it’s far from peaceful. Ghouls are cannibalistic humanoids who need to consume human flesh to survive. In this unique world, the main character, Ken Kaneki, becomes a half-ghoul after a freak accident during his first date with Rize Kamishiro, a beautiful young woman he meets in a coffee shop.
Sui Ishida’s manga became a popular title during a three-year run in the early 2010s, and it spawned a massive anime adaptation that aired in 2014. The anime was produced by Pierrot and was very successful, with a dedicated fan base that continues to support the show to this day. In fact, it’s currently the ninth most popular title on My Anime List, a popular anime and manga community website.
One of the many fascinating characters in “Tokyo Ghoul” is Rize Kamishiro, who is not one of the leads but still has a gripping story. Kamishiro’s story is far from comfortable, as her earliest storyline sees her literally become a part of Kanski. However, her character still adds depth to the show’s narrative and captivates the audience.
What many “Tokyo Ghoul” fans might not know is that Rize Kamishiro’s voice is very familiar. Kana Hanazawa provides the voice for the Japanese language version of the show. Hanazawa is a true veteran of Japan’s voice acting industry, having worked on over 300 credits throughout her career. She is best known for her collaborations with Makoto Shinkai, having voiced Yukari Yukino in 2013’s “The Garden of Words” and a teacher in 2016’s “Your Name,” one of the most successful anime films ever made. Hanazawa has also provided dubbing for English language films set for a Japanese release, such as “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.” She has even recorded several albums, many of which have made their way onto Japan’s Oricon sales charts.
For the English dub version of “Tokyo Ghoul,” Rize Kamishiro is voiced by Monica Rial, a prominent voice actor with over 650 credits to her name. Rial has been involved in the anime industry for a long time and has worked on many popular titles, such as “Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood,” “Fairy Tail,” and “My Hero Academia.” She’s probably best known for voicing the English version of Bulma in the “Dragon Ball” franchise. Rial has a passion for creating strong female characters in anime, a genre where women and girls can save the world without anyone questioning it.
Both Hanazawa and Rial have brought their unique talents to “Tokyo Ghoul,” helping to bring the fascinating and complex characters to life in both the Japanese and English versions of the show.
