Danganronpa is a popular video game franchise that debuted in 2010 with its first release on the PlayStation Portable. The franchise quickly gained a dedicated following, thanks to its intriguing murder-mystery visual novel gameplay and thrilling storylines. Since then, the series has spawned several sequels, spin-offs, manga adaptations, and even a couple of anime series.
Despite the success of the franchise, it’s been almost six years since the release of the last mainline entry, Danganronpa V3, and fans are eager for a new game. The release of Danganronpa Decadence on the Nintendo Switch in 2021 only served to fuel their desire for a new mainline entry.
Fans were left wondering if Danganronpa V3 would be the end of the series after its ambiguous ending, which revealed that the entire killing game was part of an extreme reality show being broadcast to fans all over the world. However, there is still hope for a new game, as series creator Kazutaka Kodaka has expressed a desire to return to the franchise someday.
One possibility for a new game could be a prequel to Danganronpa V3 that focuses on Rantaro Amami, a beloved character who won the right to participate in the 53rd season of the killing game. Fans of the series would undoubtedly be interested in exploring his time during the previous season, where he was known as the Ultimate Adventurer. This could offer more character development for Rantaro, who was unfortunately killed off early in Danganronpa V3.
Another possibility could be a total reboot of the series with a new entry titled Danganronpa 4. While this would require some retconning of the existing lore, it could provide an opportunity for the series to start fresh while still retaining the iconic bear mascot Monokuma and the usual gameplay mechanics.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the future of the franchise, fans can take comfort in the fact that Kodaka has not ruled out a return to Danganronpa. In the meantime, they can continue to enjoy the existing entries in the series, including Danganronpa Decadence on the Nintendo Switch.
