Is Jujutsu Kaisen derailing its story?

Jujutsu Kaisen, a popular anime and manga series, has been ramping up its story with its latest arc, but some fans are concerned that it may be going off the rails. While the series has been successful in staking its claim in the big leagues of the anime/manga industry, following in the footsteps of greats like Bleach, Naruto, and One Piece is no easy feat.

Created by Gege Akutami, Jujutsu Kaisen has been running for almost five years and has become one of the most popular series in the anime sphere. However, as the story nears its end, some readers believe that it is beginning to get out of hand.

Akutami is an ambitious writer, which has led to many satisfying moments and clever world-building in the series. However, the manga’s current direction is in danger of alienating some readers due to the sheer weight of everything it expects them to grasp.

One of the main concerns is pacing. The longest arc in the series, the Shibuya Incident arc, was already quite long and complex, taking up 58 chapters, but it all took place within a fairly small location. On the other hand, the current “culling game” arc has been running for 61 chapters and counting, taking place across several different regions of Japan, with each colony having different characters, environments, and goals for the main cast to accomplish. While splitting it up into smaller arcs of 7 or 15 chapters should be a bonus, some readers have felt like the constant location shifts have muddied their grasp on the big picture.

Moreover, the arc just before the culling game began was also mostly set-up for it, meaning one could easily argue the culling game has actually taken up 76 chapters. Since the game started, there have been near-constant fights against brand new characters with brand new abilities and complex backstories. All of this has resulted in a feeling of exhaustion in some fans.

The complexity of the story and world-building is another concern. Jujutsu Kaisen has a fairly straightforward base plot and characters, but the mechanics of cursed energy are complex enough to rival Hunter x Hunter’s “nen,” which is often seen as the most complex power system in anime. The uses of cursed energy have continued to grow in number as the series progresses, and advanced versions of barriers and domains, as well as new concepts like cursed technique reversal, binding vows, and Tengen himself, have made it hard to keep track of what the limits of cursed energy are. Now that cursed energy is being used in increasingly complicated ways, in an increasingly complicated plot, it feels hard to keep everything memorized.

The stakes have also become higher and more complicated, making it harder for the heroes to overcome the villains. In a recent chapter, Sukuna, the cursed spirit who possessed Yuji Itadori, was able to escape the restrictions of Yuji’s body and possess Megumi Fushiguro’s body instead. In his new body, Sukuna has nigh-unlimited control of his own actions, and can use Megumi’s cursed techniques on top of his own. With Sukuna having teamed up with Kenjaku, the two main villains of the story are now in an alliance, and individually, they were already far stronger than any of the heroes.

Even special-grade sorcerers like Yuta Okkotsu and Yuki Tsukumo aren’t able to take them on. The only people who could were Satoru Gojo, who is currently imprisoned, and Hana Kurusu who might be dead or dying. This bottlenecks the plot, as either Gojo returns to give the
