Why did the old sorcerers agree to Kenjaku’s request in Jujutsu Kaisen?

In Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 220, the story continued to unfold as Kenjaku’s master plan was revealed. The body-hopping sorcerer intentionally created a glitch in the Culling Game’s system by forcing Kogane to implement two more rules. The first prohibited new players from participating in the game, while the second declared that the game would continue until only Suguru Geto and Megumi Fushiguro remained alive. As Kenjaku explained the construction and necessity of Tengen’s pure barriers, the chapter revealed that the Hida Mountain barrier was the resting place for Sukuna’s mummified remains.

The presence of Sukuna’s original body connects to Angel’s explanation in Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 220 regarding why the ancient sorcerers agreed to participate in the Culling Game. Angel admitted that a major reason why so many of the ancient sorcerers had agreed to Kenjaku’s proposal was because they did not know how to become cursed objects after death. Angel further revealed that Sukuna was the only one who had experienced it once, speculating that the King of Curses had learned to divide his soul into cursed objects.

Jujutsu Kaisen introduced the issue of the indestructibility of powerful cursed objects at the beginning of the series. After Yuji had eaten the first finger and become the host to the King of Curses, Gojo brought him to the holding room covered in talismans, explaining that Sukuna’s mummified fingers were indestructible, even giving a demonstration. Sukuna’s mummified body in Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 220 showed the sorcerer with four eyes, similar to how he appeared in the Heian-era flashback in Chapter 219.

Kenjaku’s elaborate plan and centuries-old alliance with the ancient sorcerers suggest that the body-hopping sorcerer himself did not know how to turn himself into a cursed object, but could force other souls into a Binding Vow, allowing them to reincarnate. Kenjaku admitted that he had bluffed about immediately starting the merger with Tengen during his fight against Choso in the Star Corridor. This indicates that Kenjaku was likely lying about his end goal as well.

The villain even experimented with humans and cursed spirits to create the Death Paintings and went as far as to inhabit Kaori Itadori’s body in order to create Yuji, who he believed to be the perfect vessel for the King of Curses. It was obvious that the body-hopping sorcerer had not meticulously planned Sukuna’s revival and the Culling Game for centuries just out of curiosity regarding the fate of a transformed humanity.

Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 221 spoilers further reveal that Sukuna had apparently promised Kenjaku something in return for his cooperation. The body-hopping sorcerer’s conversations with Uraume suggest that the Kenjaku and Sukuna have their own separate goals, although mangaka Gege Akutami is yet to reveal what the two antagonists are plotting. It is possible that Kenjaku has allied himself with Sukuna and Uraume in hopes of learning the art of turning oneself into a cursed object and invited several powerful Heian-era sorcerers into the scheme to utilize their massive cursed energy reserves.
