Jujutsu Kaisen manga on temporary hiatus again

Jujutsu Kaisen, a popular manga series, has announced a temporary hiatus after releasing chapter 221. The manga will be on break for a few weeks and will return with the next chapter on May 14. This news was shared on Shonen Jump News’ official Twitter handle, and further details were provided by Redbeanime.

The break will technically be for two weeks, as all Weekly Shōnen Jump works will not release any new chapters during the week from April 29 to May 5 due to Japan’s Golden Week. Jujutsu Kaisen will resume serialization on May 14 in Weekly Shōnen Jump Issue #24.

This is not the first time that Jujutsu Kaisen has gone on hiatus. In March 2022, the manga went on a brief hiatus due to the mangaka Gege Akutami’s poor health condition. At that time, Akutami was in the process of recovering, and the manga took a one-week break. The year before, Jujutsu Kaisen announced an indefinite hiatus in June 2021 due to Akutami’s health. However, Akutami assured fans that their mental health was fine, and their health condition was not serious. They admitted that they wanted to focus on finishing up the series, stating that “I have been asked by the editorial department to take a break from the series, but I don’t want to slow down the weekly serialization of Jujutsu Kaisen since I’d like to draw the end of the series as soon as possible and just put a hold on my answer.”

The manga industry in Japan has been known to have stressful working conditions, which have negatively impacted numerous manga creators, with many suffering from debilitating health conditions, forcing them to take frequent breaks. For instance, Yoshihiro Togashi, the creator of Hunter x Hunter, has had to take multiple breaks due to his deteriorating health. Kōhei Horikoshi, the mangaka of My Hero Academia, has taken three breaks since the beginning of 2023 due to his health, with Yusuke Murata, the artist of One-Punch Man, imploring Horikoshi to “please take care of yourself.”

Despite the health concerns in the industry, Jujutsu Kaisen has quickly risen to become one of the most popular shonen series since its launch in Weekly Shōnen Jump in March 2018. The manga follows an ordinary high schooler named Yuji Itadori who, in an effort to save his friends, swallows a rotten finger talisman. Unknowingly, he has marked himself for death as the finger belongs to Sukuna, the King of Curses, leading to the sorcerers’ society calling for his execution. Thanks to Satoru Gojo, the sorcerers agree to postpone Yuji’s death sentence until he has trained his body enough to swallow the rest of Sukuna’s fingers, allowing the sorcerers to rid the world of Sukuna, and Yuji, forever.

Fans of Jujutsu Kaisen can read chapter 221, which releases on April 23, on Viz Media and Manga Plus.
