Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 220 reveals Four Joukais dynamics

Jujutsu Kaisen is a popular manga series written and illustrated by Gege Akutami. The story follows the journey of a high school student named Yuji Itadori, who becomes a Jujutsu sorcerer after swallowing a cursed object and gains the power to control cursed energy. The series has gained immense popularity among manga and anime enthusiasts due to its compelling storyline, well-developed characters, and unique world-building.

Chapter 220 of Jujutsu Kaisen is highly anticipated among fans as it reveals crucial information about the Four Joukais and their importance in enhancing Barrier Techniques. The chapter was released on Monday, April 17, 2023, at 12:00 am JST and is available on Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump Magazine, MangaPlus, Viz Media’s website, and the Shonen Jump+ app.

The chapter opens with Kenjaku, a cursed spirit who is the primary antagonist of the series, speaking to Kogane, a shikigami who works for Tengen, the cursed spirit tree. Kenjaku asks Kogane to close the entry of new players into the Culling Game, but Kogane refuses, stating that Tengen’s barriers are essential in suppressing the birth of curses. Kenjaku then reveals to Kogane that there are four main Joukais that enhance the accuracy of Barrier Techniques, and their importance is further explored throughout the chapter.

The term Joukai refers to pure or superior barriers that are greater than normal ones. The four Joukais mentioned in the chapter are the Imperial Palace, the Star Corridor under Jujutsu High, the Yamakuni-no-misaki joukai, and the Hidareizan-joukai. Kenjaku explains that the Culling Game is a Bonkai, a barrier superior to Tengen’s Joukai, that was made using Tengen’s Joukai barriers as a base. He argues that if Tengen’s Joukais were released after the Shibuya Incident, the Culling Game would have ended, and this would have messed up his plans.

However, Kenjaku also reveals that Tengen’s Joukai barriers weren’t released due to the fear of curses being born uncontrollably. Kenjaku threatens Kogane to listen to him and close the entry of new players into the Culling Game, saying he’d otherwise forcefully end the game by destroying Tengen’s Joukai barrier that served as a base for the Culling Game. He also explains to Tengen that he needs those Joukai barriers to merge with Tengen and further his plan.

These revelations leave fans in even more confusion about Kenjaku’s endgame and the fate of Tengen. The chapter also deepens the lore and world-building of the Jujutsu Kaisen universe, providing readers with an in-depth understanding of the Joukai and their importance. Overall, Chapter 220 of Jujutsu Kaisen is a must-read for fans of the series who want to keep up with the latest developments in the storyline.
