Shonen Jump teased Jujutsu Kaisen ahead of Season 2 with a playful roast

In preparation for the upcoming second season of the popular anime Jujutsu Kaisen, the Shonen Jump manga Akane-banashi by Yuki Suenaga and Takamasa Moue has taken a hilarious approach to parodying the series. Known for its clever reinvention of Shonen Jump tropes, Akane-banashi follows the story of Akane, a young girl who becomes a professional Rakugoka, a skilled performer of a classical Japanese comedy style. Chapter 55 of Akane-banashi, translated by Stephen Paul, features Akane attending a Rakugo competition judged by Ikken Arakawa, a legendary Rakugoka who also appears in the show “Yin-Yang Cops”, a clear parody of Jujutsu Kaisen’s Kyoto Calamity arc. The fake show’s main characters resemble Itadori, Nobara, and Nanami, and its arc name is similar to the manga’s Shibuya Incident arc. Despite only appearing for one panel, the parody is a hilarious roast that demonstrates the deep understanding that Shonen Jump mangaka have of each other’s series.

While Jujutsu Kaisen is an intense battle manga with high stakes and great fights, Akane-banashi is a much more realistic series that features “fights” consisting of Rakugo performances instead of punching or sorcery. However, Akane-banashi has previously referenced traditional Shonen series like One Piece and has innovatively utilized classic Shonen tropes in its “battles”. Thus, the series parodying Jujutsu Kaisen, even in a much less subtle way than it did One Piece, is not entirely surprising.

Despite the parody poking fun at Jujutsu Kaisen’s somewhat silly name and general character types, it does not come off as mean-spirited. In fact, it seems more like a celebration of Jujutsu Kaisen’s return for its second season than a mockery of its sillier aspects. The parody also serves to set audience expectations for Ikken Arakawa and serves a purpose in Akane-banashi’s broader narrative.

Overall, the parody in Akane-banashi demonstrates the series’ ability to excel at any kind of comedy it wants to, and it is hoped that the manga will continue its parodic trend and make more playful jabs at Jujutsu Kaisen before its second season airs this summer.
