Denji from Chainsaw Man or Kaneki from Tokyo Ghoul: who’s the better half-other antihero?

Denji and Ken Kaneki are both half-human, half-monster characters in shonen and seinen anime. Denji is the protagonist of Chainsaw Man, while Ken Kaneki is the antihero of the renowned seinen title Tokyo Ghoul. Although they share similarities in their life story, the latter is more compelling and nuanced than the former.

Ken Kaneki once lived an ordinary life as a college student until he was attacked by a ghoul, and a doctor implanted the ghoul’s organs into him. This turned him into a half-ghoul with a ghoulish left eye, and he had to give up his ordinary human life. Ken learned that some ghouls are innocent, and he sought to unite the two feuding sides. He was tortured brutally, awakening his ghoulish side and leading him to fight against both ghouls and CCG investigators. However, he found a balance between his two selves after losing and regaining his memory.

Denji, on the other hand, was lured into a trap and was butchered along with his devil dog, Pochita. They fused to create the human devil now known as Chainsaw Man. Denji is like an anti-dreamer, having modest and simple desires, and aims to eat bread with jam, have a real bed to sleep in, and get himself a girlfriend. He willingly becomes Makima’s “dog” and follows orders without question. He must embrace his powers without losing his remaining half of humanity.

In the end, Ken Kaneki is a better hero than Denji. Ken is deeply compelling on his own, while Denji is appealing because Chainsaw Man as a whole is a shonen deconstruction. Ken has cooler powers and a better getup than Denji, and he has more thematic depth, emotionally and philosophically. Ken’s personality was warped by his brutal ghoul nature, but he also retained his noble humanity, making him almost like two characters in one while Denji is more straightforward.

Ken’s struggles echo society’s own struggle to reconcile its ghoul and human sides, and his character represents the moral ambiguity of the world. On the other hand, Denji’s character represents the idea of embracing the other half of oneself, regardless of the consequences. Although both characters have their unique merits, Ken Kaneki is a more well-rounded and memorable half-other antihero.
