Dragon Ball GT made a movie villain canon to the series

The Dragon Ball franchise is known for its complex and ever-evolving canon, with certain characters and events shifting in and out of continuity over time. One example of this is the case of Cooler, the movie villain from Dragon Ball Z who was brought back into the canon through an episode of Dragon Ball GT.

In Dragon Ball Z, Cooler was introduced as the brother of Frieza, the main antagonist of the series’ Namek and Frieza Sagas. In his two movies, Cooler’s Revenge and The Return of Cooler, he sought vengeance against Goku for killing his brother. However, these movies were later declared non-canon, meaning they did not fit into the established timeline of the Dragon Ball universe.

Years later, in an episode of Dragon Ball GT, Cooler was brought back to life as one of several long-dead villains who emerged from a portal to hell. This reintroduction of Cooler into the canon of the series was a subtle one, but it had significant implications for the wider Dragon Ball universe.

Dragon Ball GT, despite being a controversial series among fans, is still considered part of the official timeline of the franchise, leading into the more recent series Dragon Ball Super. As such, Cooler’s inclusion in GT means that he is once again considered a canonical character within the Dragon Ball universe.

This also means that Cooler could potentially make a return in Dragon Ball Super, as his resurrection in GT paves the way for his reappearance in the current continuity. Frieza, another movie villain who was later brought back into the series, serves as proof that even seemingly impossible resurrections are possible within the Dragon Ball canon.

Overall, Cooler’s return to the canon of the Dragon Ball series is an interesting example of the ever-changing nature of the franchise’s continuity. While some characters and events are deemed non-canon and erased from the timeline, others are reintroduced and given new life, often with major implications for the series’ overall mythology.
