Fans of the Pokémon anime were recently treated to a fascinating discovery as the script for two lost episodes was made public for the first time. The episodes, titled “Team Rocket Vs. Team Plasma,” were never aired in any country due to the 2011 Tohoku earthquake in Japan. The disaster caused massive damage and forced the episodes to be delayed and ultimately canceled, as they featured a significant amount of destruction to Castelia City, a fictional location in the anime.
The script reveals that the episodes would have seen Ash and his friends encounter an excavation project run by Team Rocket in the desert. The team of villains is digging in the Relic Castle, searching for an object known as Meteonite, which is said to function like a miniature sun that kept the castle going during a period of heavy volcanic activity that blotted out the skies. The large group of Team Rocket grunts successfully locate the Meteonite in the castle and confirm that it is overflowing with energy.
As Giovanni and the Rockets celebrate their success, a small team of Team Plasma members infiltrate the celebration. Professor Juniper and Looker, who ran into them in the desert, also attend the party. However, the Meteonite’s energy begins to fluctuate and somehow synchronizes with Pikachu, causing its power to overflow as well. Team Plasma makes their move, attacking from above with their own helicopter and attempting to steal the Meteonite. However, the device is rendered unstable and begins overflowing with energy, causing destruction throughout the nearby area.
As Pikachu suffers from the energy build-up, Ash and Pikachu realize the only solution is to destroy the Meteonite. This suped-up state allows Pikachu to do just that, but not without causing significant destruction. The episode also marks the first appearance of Ghetsis, the evil Team Plasma leader, and sets up the presence of N, who is referred to in this episode as “the hero” by Team Plasma. It’s worth noting that Team Plasma’s eventual appearance in the anime was more inspired by the Pokémon Black 2/White 2 games, whereas the version in this episode is based on the original games’ take. This difference in goals would have made for a very different version of the Black and White era of the Pokémon anime.
Overall, the release of the script provides an interesting glimpse into what could have been, as well as a reminder of the earthquake’s impact on the anime industry. While fans may never see the lost episodes animated, the script has allowed them to visualize the story and speculate on how it might have changed the course of the Pokémon anime.
