Niantic, the developer of the massively popular mobile game, Pokémon Go, has recently responded to claims that the game’s revenue has plummeted to a five-year low. According to a recent report by Mobilegamer.Biz, the game’s revenue fell from $42 million in March to $34.7 million in April, making it the app’s lowest monthly revenue since February 2018. However, Niantic has refuted these claims, stating that third-party estimates of their revenue are often incorrect and that their revenue in 2023 is up from last year.
Despite Niantic’s rebuttal, the news of the alleged decline comes at a time when Pokémon Go fans are protesting against changes to the game’s raid system. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Niantic introduced remote play features that allowed gamers to participate in raids from the safety of their homes. This feature was particularly beneficial for those living in remote areas or with disabilities that made it difficult for them to travel to raid locations. However, Niantic recently announced that it was increasing its remote raid pass prices and capping the number of in-game events that players could attend each day, seemingly in an attempt to get players back to pre-pandemic gameplay norms.
This move has not gone down well with the community, and many fans have voiced their anger over the changes. Despite this, Niantic maintains that the changes have already increased in-person raiding, and they are excited to introduce new features in the coming months. The company also stated that they don’t focus on month-to-month trends, as they fluctuate based on major live events.
Regardless of the recent controversy, Niantic’s hit app still has the ability to draw sizable crowds to its real-world events, which represent another revenue stream for the developer. In February, 17,000 fans attended Niantic’s Las Vegas Pokémon Go tour, causing connectivity issues for those who had paid $30 to attend the ticketed event. Operators had to ask the unexpected guests to stay away from the public park where the event was being held to ensure a smooth event for Sunday ticket holders. Despite the hiccup, Niantic’s real-world events continue to be popular and a significant source of revenue for the company.
