Eternal Dragons of Dragon Ball: Their Activities Between Summonings

The Dragon Ball franchise centers around a group of powerful fighters from different styles and species, but it always comes back to its titular objects – the Dragon Balls. These magical orbs, when all collected, can summon powerful wish-granting dragons. The most famous of these dragons is Shenron, who has become a beloved character among fans. However, despite his importance, little is known about Shenron’s life outside of granting wishes.

While Shenron and his Namekian counterpart Porunga are only shown granting wishes, it is suggested that they have a life outside of this arduous task. Shenron’s attitude towards granting wishes sometimes seems like a drudgery, and he complains when the Z Fighters take too long to decide on a wish. This implies that he has other things to do beyond using his magical powers to grant wishes. However, the manga and anime give little indication of what these other things might be.

One theory about Shenron’s activities is that he is tied to the Dragon Balls themselves, having an almost symbiotic relationship with them. When the balls are not in use, they house Shenron’s spirit and energy. This is backed up by the original Dragon Ball anime, where when King Piccolo kills Shenron, Kami restores him, stating that the dragon’s power is returning to the Dragon Balls.

The non-canon Dragon Ball GT also sheds some light on Shenron’s activities beyond granting wishes. In the final saga of the anime, a corrupted Shenron notes how much the Dragon Balls have been abused over the years. After Goku defeats the villainous Omega Shenron, he chooses to leave behind his family and loved ones in order to join Shenron in restoring the Dragon Balls to power. While some fans believe that this involves an incredible level of training, the most likely situation is that Shenron merely sleeps within the Dragon Balls to restore their mutual energy.

Therefore, it can be concluded that the dragon’s energy is tied to the Dragon Balls, which is why he enters a relaxing slumber promptly after granting a wish. This allows him to rest his tired bones and bring back the Dragon Balls’ wish-granting power. Moreover, at the end of GT, the Dragon Balls outright merged with Goku, who likely had a metaphysical slumber of his own afterward. Although there is no official explanation for Shenron’s whereabouts, given the evidence across various anime and manga, this is the best theory fans are likely to get any time soon.
