When does Sasuke return in Naruto?

“Sasuke Uchiha departed from the Hidden Leaf Village on a journey to gain strength and seek revenge against his own brother. However, it took him several years to return.

Sasuke Uchiha is a complex character in Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto franchise. As the sole surviving Uchiha in the Hidden Leaf Village at the beginning of the series, he carried a sense of loneliness and anger that resonated with his teammate Naruto Uzumaki. Both boys lacked a family and faced the harsh reality of the ninja world, but Sasuke’s circumstances were particularly dark. Driven by a desire for power and vengeance, Sasuke left the village after realizing that his sensei Kakashi Hatake and others couldn’t provide the training he needed to defeat his renegade brother Itachi.

Despite their contrasting personalities, Sasuke and Naruto developed an unbreakable bond of brotherhood and rivalry that shaped the manga and anime for years. Naruto refused to accept Sasuke’s departure and made it his sole mission to bring his friend back home. Every training session and every new jutsu Naruto learned was aimed at surpassing Sasuke and guiding him back onto the right path. When Sasuke finally reunited with Team 7 to confront the Ten Tails and save Konoha, his rivalry with Naruto had reached its climax.

Sasuke’s return to the Hidden Leaf Village took place in Naruto Shippuden Episode 478, titled “The Unity Sign.” However, the outcome of their ultimate showdown didn’t result in Sasuke’s desired homecoming. To understand why, it’s important to delve into what drove Sasuke away from the village initially and his actions during his absence.

Sasuke shared a close bond with his older brother Itachi, a prodigious ninja whom Sasuke admired. However, Itachi betrayed his clan and the Hidden Leaf Village by annihilating the entire Uchiha clan. This act left a deep emotional scar on Sasuke, fueling his desire for revenge. In an attempt to ignite Sasuke’s vengeance and drive him to become stronger, Itachi used the Tsukuyomi genjutsu to force Sasuke to repeatedly witness the death of their family and clan.

Obsessed with gaining the power necessary to destroy Itachi, Sasuke believed that mastering Kakashi’s Chidori lightning technique would be sufficient. However, his subsequent encounter with Itachi revealed the inadequacy of his training. When Sasuke was marked with a curse mark by Orochimaru during the Chunin exams, it triggered his decision to leave the village and study under a more powerful master. Orochimaru, one of the Legendary Sannin, possessed skills and techniques that surpassed what Kakashi could offer. Taking Orochimaru’s offer to join him, Sasuke departed from the Hidden Leaf.

Sakura and Naruto were devastated by Sasuke’s departure and desperately hoped that he had been abducted against his will by Orochimaru. Naruto pledged to bring him back, but upon confronting Sasuke and learning the truth, their rivalry escalated into an epic battle. Naruto spent years searching for Sasuke, undergoing rigorous training. When Naruto discovered that Sasuke was about to confront Itachi, Team 7 raced to stop him but arrived too late.

Orochimaru’s intentions for Sasuke were made clear from the beginning. In exchange for the power to defeat Itachi, Sasuke would become Orochimaru’s next host body. While Sasuke appeared to comply, he had plans that even Orochimaru didn’t foresee. After learning everything he could from his master, Sasuke seized the opportunity when Orochimaru was weakened and consumed his power. Equipped to face Itachi, Sasuke left Orochimaru’s hideout

but instead of returning to the Hidden Leaf, he formed a new team called Taka with three of Orochimaru’s former test subjects: Karin, Suigetsu, and Jugo.

The Hidden Leaf attempted to intervene before Sasuke could kill his own brother, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Sasuke’s act of murder officially labeled him as a rogue ninja. After discovering the truth about Itachi’s actions, which were prompted by the Third Hokage and the village elders, Sasuke briefly joined the Akatsuki. Driven by vengeance and pain, he turned against the Hidden Leaf and vowed to destroy it at any cost. However, before he could carry out his plan, the threat of Madara and the Ten Tails emerged, leading Sasuke to temporarily ally with Naruto in an attempt to spare the village. He aimed to become Hokage and correct the past’s wrongs.

In the aforementioned Episode 478 of Naruto Shippuden, Naruto and Sasuke engaged in an epic battle that left both of them severely wounded. Sasuke lost his left arm, and Naruto lost his right when their Chidori and Rasengan clashed. As they believed themselves to be on the brink of death, Sasuke finally yielded and promised to step aside, allowing Naruto to become Hokage. Although Naruto and Sakura wished for Sasuke to return to where he belonged, he refused, feeling the need to redeem himself for his past actions.

In Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, which takes place fifteen years after Naruto Shippuden, the Hidden Leaf Village has undergone significant changes under the leadership of the Seventh Hokage. Sasuke has yet to fully return to the village, but he collaborates with Naruto by gathering intelligence to protect the village. Married to Sakura and father to their daughter Sarada, whom he hasn’t seen in years due to his self-redemption mission, Sasuke is prompted to return to Konoha when Sarada accompanies Naruto to a secret meeting with him. Witnessing the impact of his absence on Sarada’s life, he makes an effort to be more present and trains both Sarada and Boruto, who becomes his student.

Determining who is stronger between Naruto and Sasuke is not a straightforward question. At the end of their most intense battle, Sasuke acknowledged Naruto as the victor. However, throughout the franchise, Sasuke proved to be the more talented student. He possessed natural abilities, intelligence, and quickly grasped training concepts. Additionally, he exhibited better chakra control, an area in which Naruto struggled for years. The two rivals clashed five times, with Sasuke winning two battles, two deemed inconclusive, and Naruto emerging victorious in the fifth and final encounter. While Sasuke initially displayed more dedication, Naruto’s unwavering determination enabled him to surpass Sasuke and master techniques beyond his reach.

Sasuke’s acquisition of the Rinnegan didn’t occur by chance. During a shared near-death experience with Naruto, they discovered that they were both reincarnated descendants of Hagoromo Otsutsuki, the Sage of the Six Paths. Hagoromo bestowed upon them each half of his chakra, which awakened the Rinnegan in Sasuke’s left eye and granted Naruto the Six Paths Sage Mode.

As of now, Sasuke is still alive in both the Boruto manga and anime. However, there is speculation among fans that his fate may be uncertain. In the introductory episode of the Boruto anime, Boruto and Kawaki appear to be engaged in a rivalry even more dangerous than the childhood battle between Sasuke and Naruto. With the absence of Naruto and Sasuke and Kawaki’s threat to send Boruto where he sent the Seventh Hokage, it suggests a grim future for the older generation of ninja heroes.

Furthermore, Boruto is seen wearing Sasuke’s Hidden Leaf headband, which he has done intermittently since becoming Sasuke’s student. Additionally, he wields Sasuke’s sword in a scene, implying that his master may no longer be able to fight. Whether this means Sasuke is dead or incapacitated is unclear. Given Boruto’s reliance on the previous generation, there will likely come a time when neither Naruto nor Sasuke is present to save the day.
