Digimon is more similar to Dragon Ball than Pokémon in a key aspect

For years, fans have been comparing Digimon and Pokémon, but in reality, Digimon resembles Dragon Ball more than Pokémon, specifically in one significant aspect.

Both Digimon and Pokémon share many similarities, leading to numerous comparisons within the anime fandom. However, when it comes to the nature of their transformations, Digimon proves to be more akin to Dragon Ball.

Dragon Ball revolves around the adventures of Goku, a Saiyan warrior who trains to become the greatest fighter. In the series, Goku discovers his ability to transform into various powerful forms, starting with Super Saiyan and progressing to Super Saiyan 2, 3, 4, Super Saiyan God, and Super Saiyan Blue. Each transformation grants him temporary increased strength accompanied by a physical change.

Similarly, in Digimon Adventure episode 3, the characters encounter dangerous situations where their Digimon partners evolve into stronger forms. Unlike Pokémon’s permanent evolutions, these Digimon transformations are temporary bursts of power accompanied by complete physical changes, resembling the Super Saiyan transformations in Dragon Ball. Additionally, Digimon possess different levels of digivolution, akin to the increasing power levels of Super Saiyan. After evolving into Greymon, for example, a Digimon can further evolve into SkullGreymon, WarGreymon, and Omnimon, maintaining their identity while increasing in strength. Once their power is depleted, Digimon revert to their rookie forms, similar to how SSJ4 Goku returns to his normal state without the Super Saiyan boost.

Not only do the transformations function similarly in both series, but their initial triggers are also comparable. Goku first turned Super Saiyan when faced with the death of his friend Krillin and the imminent danger to his son. Likewise, Digimon can only digivolve when their partners are in mortal peril, further emphasizing the parallels between their transformations. While there are still undeniable similarities between Digimon and Pokémon, the unique digivolving ability of Digimon aligns them more closely with Dragon Ball’s Super Saiyans.
