But before Ash and Pikachu departed, they were granted a series of special episodes that reunited Ash with old friends and Pokémon.
The final episode featuring this iconic duo aired in Japan on Friday, and despite its seemingly unassuming nature, it paid homage to the first episode through various references. Just like in the very first episode, Ash oversleeps after spending the night at his mother’s house and rushes off to Professor Oak’s lab.

It is at this moment that the two friends witness a rainbow, reminiscent of their sighting of Ho-Oh in the first episode.
