After facing backlash from Jujutsu Kaisen fans, VIZ Media has reportedly made changes to Satoru Gojo’s dialogue in Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 221. This modification occurred a few days after the chapter’s release on April 24.
In the previous chapter, Yuji and others successfully unsealed Gojo from the Prison Realm, leading to an encounter between the strongest sorcerer, Kenjaku, and Sukuna. However, their fight was postponed to a later date, coinciding with Geto’s death anniversary.
Following the release of Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 221, titled “Gain and Loss,” VIZ Media faced backlash from fans. As a result, the company decided to change Satoru Gojo’s dialogue in the chapter from “No” to “Nah, I’d win.”
In the chapter, Gojo was unsealed and immediately faced Kenjaku and Suguru Geto. While Sukuna expressed his desire to fight Gojo, Kenjaku intervened due to their promise. Consequently, Gojo proposed a future fight on December 24, aiming to kill Kenjaku on the same day as Suguru’s death anniversary. When asked about his expectation of losing, Gojo confidently asserted his belief in victory.
The issue arose because VIZ Media had previously translated the dialogue as “No” in an earlier chapter, leading to inconsistency in the manga. This inconsistency angered fans, prompting VIZ Media to change the dialogue to “Nah, I’d win.”
Jujutsu Kaisen fans were thrilled to see VIZ Media officially address the issue and change the dialogue, as it demonstrated that the company had listened to their concerns. This incident has also highlighted the potential for fans to voice their opinions and request changes in future manga translations. Some fans even speculated that VIZ Media intentionally made the change after seeing discrepancies between the unofficial fan translations and the company’s initial translation, which had negatively impacted fans’ experience.
Fans compared the different versions of the dialogue, including the Japanese original, VIZ’s early translation, and the revised translation following the backlash. Many fans criticized the official translators for their lack of consistency and failure to respect the original Japanese work, suggesting that they had become lazy in their approach.
In light of this incident, fans hope that VIZ Media will ensure accurate translations in the future. It has now become evident that collective efforts from fans can bring about official changes to the work if they identify issues with the translations.
