Jujutsu Kaisen mangaka Gege Akutami has addressed a continuity error in the latest chapter of the series to avoid criticism from fans. In Chapter 221, alongside the highly anticipated return of Gojo Satoru, an unexpected mistake involving Yuji Itadori’s ear occurred.
Gege Akutami took to the author’s comments section of Weekly Shōnen Jump to apologize for the error. The mangaka acknowledged that Itadori’s right ear returning was their mistake, while assuring fans that Gojo’s comeback was intentional. However, the apology seemed to have gone unnoticed by many readers who didn’t realize there was an issue in the first place.
Fans reacted to Akutami’s confession with amusement. Some fans admitted they hadn’t even noticed Itadori’s missing ear, while others made light-hearted jokes about the situation. The ear injury in question happened in Chapter 214 when Itadori fought against Sukuna while he possessed Megumi. Sukuna’s attack had severed the top of Itadori’s ear, resulting in a bloody scene. While fans found humor in Akutami’s comment, some speculated on the hidden meaning behind the latter part of the sentence. They believed Akutami had purposely kept Gojo restrained and might have ominous plans for the sorcerer, even after his release from confinement.
Akutami has expressed their dislike for Gojo in the past. In previous author comments, the mangaka made pointed remarks about the character they created. They mentioned that Gojo lacked personality and even suggested that 2020 would be a better year after Gojo’s absence. Akutami once asked fans to vote for a different character in a popularity poll after Gojo had overwhelmingly won a previous one.
Akutami’s journey in the manga industry began as an assistant to Yatsuhiro Kanō on the series Kiss x Death. They later released several one-shots, including Kamishiro Sōsa in May 2014. In 2017, Akutami wrote a four-chapter piece called Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School, which eventually became the prologue to the main series Jujutsu Kaisen, titled Jujutsu Kaisen 0. Jujutsu Kaisen started serialization in Weekly Shōnen Jump in March 2018 and has gained immense popularity, with over 70 million copies in circulation as of August 2022. An anime adaptation by MAPPA premiered in October 2020, and a second season is scheduled to air on July 6, 2023.
Jujutsu Kaisen will be on a short break and is set to return on May 14, 2023.
