Anime enthusiasts are eager to determine who can defeat Son Goku in a fair match, but it has become evident that asking this question serves no purpose. The anime community enjoys exploring the industry in various creative ways, and fans of combat shonen series like Dragon Ball engage in the entertaining activity of comparing the strongest fighters from different series to speculate about hypothetical showdowns. While these debates and death battle scenarios can be fun, they rarely yield meaningful answers.
In crossover media such as fan art and fan fiction, anything can happen, including fights to the death between characters like Son Goku and Saitama the caped baldy. However, the question of whether a particular character can beat Goku has lost its significance as a half-serious inquiry among anime fans. From the start, these questions failed to provide meaningful comparisons between anime series since it is like comparing apples to oranges.
While it is part of the spirit of fiction to daydream about Goku engaging in crossover death battles, pitting fighters against him in a serious context can be detrimental, as it undermines the unique qualities that other combat-oriented shonen series offer. Only a few anime fighters can match or surpass Goku on his own terms, and they should not be expected to do so. Shonen anime would become shallow if every series tried to replicate Dragon Ball, and the industry already has enough Goku clones. The essence of shonen lies in expressing the same fundamental values in different ways, with diverse power levels and systems.
Dragon Ball established an exceptionally high standard with its Super Saiyan heroes and alien villains capable of obliterating mountains or even planets with energy blasts, making it challenging to find fair matchups against Goku. Most other anime heroes fall short in terms of raw power, but that does not make them failed rivals. These shonen protagonists are well-balanced within their respective series, and that is what makes them entertaining, rather than attempting to surpass Goku. Those who take these Goku matchups too seriously isolate themselves from fantastic shonen heroes who may lack Super Saiyan abilities but possess compelling qualities of their own. Even lightheartedly asking “Can he beat Goku?” distracts fans from appreciating the unique substance that these non-Goku characters bring.
Even in the context of Dragon Ball, the leading series featuring immensely powerful fighters, a shonen hero encompasses more than just strength and flashy transformations with colorful hair. As a genuine shonen series, Dragon Ball also emphasizes virtues and strengths such as courage, the power of friendship, the virtue of perseverance, and the power of hope. These qualities are Goku’s true strengths, not solely his ki, and this applies doubly to shonen series where protagonists cannot destroy entire moons with their energy blasts.
The 1980s epitomized unabashed machismo, as seen in Fist of the North Star, and the 1990s carried some of that essence as well. However, by the early 2020s, shonen anime explores modern masculinity in more balanced and thought-provoking ways, setting a better example for boys everywhere. Merely relying on physical strength and being the strongest holds little value, as Goku has already demonstrated. Modern shonen heroes are beloved for who they are, not just for their combat prowess or power.
By continuing to pose reductionist arguments like “Can X beat Goku?” we do a great disservice to these shonen heroes who embody values that go beyond physical strength. It is an incredibly high standard to meet, and shonen heroes do not need to meet it. Protagonists like Tanjiro Kamado, Izuku Midoriya, and Yuji Itadori possess the outward strength to win battles and the inward strength to positively impact the world, inspiring countless anime fans in the process. Son Goku would be immensely proud of these new shonen heroes, even if their strength pales in comparison to his own.
